Take That Flu! (Part 2)

Since I’ve gotten quite a few questions about why these 10 tips, I thought I’d help give you some reasons to believe or at least to research on your own. I don’t blame any of the skeptics–I mean, I’m not a Medical Doctor, and my training at California College of Ayurveda and Institute for Integrative Nutrition was great, but not necessarily mainstream.

sorry-sick-day-due-get-well-ecard-someecardsIn addition, I thought I should post a few additional suggestions for what to do if despite your best preventative efforts, you or your family still succumb to a cold or flu.

What to Do if You’ve Got the Cold or Flu(not the stomach flu, that’s another issue):

1. Ignore the starve a fever, feed a cold. But do listen to your body & eat nutrient dense foods (veggies & fruits to the rescue!). Also, eat enough garlic to kill a coven of vampires.

2. Garlic oil. Because of its active ingredient, allicin, garlic acts as a natural antibiotic. A few drops of garlic oil in your ear will help clear an ear infection, but also helps with sinus issues. A friend of mine uses it religiously on her little ones, and they are one of the healthiest families I know. Her tip–put the drops in just after they are asleep.

3. Oil of Oregano. I suppose this could be used as another preventative measure, but I use it only for more drastic measures. Only if I already have the flu. Because it’s SERIOUSLY potent stuff. I don’t recommend putting the drops straight under your tongue, and I’m quite sure that if mothers were to wash cursing mouths out with oil of oregano instead of soap, no future curse words would ever be uttered. Ever. I like to put it on the soles of feet (your skin digests what you put on it) or ingest it in a glass of water. Chase it with juice or honey.

4.Elderberry Syrup. Purchase this at your local health food store, or make your own. Standard dose is 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp for kids and 1/2 Tbsp to 1 Tbsp for adults. If the flu does strike, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear.

5. Rest up. Drink a ton of fluids. Zinc, Vitamin C,  & other anti-oxidant rich food.  Chamomile or Breathe-Easy Tea. Ginger can be very warming if you’ve got the chills. And listen to any advice your mama or grandma tells you.

And, Top Ten  Prevention Tips Explained:

1. Hand Washing. This one was obvious, and probably already practiced. I just wanted to re-iterate the length of time that should be spent washing.

2. Get Outside. Aside from my own personal bias for outdoor exercise over the gym, even the brainiacs at Harvard recommend outdoor time for these reasons: Sunlight increases vitamin D levels (I’d still supplement), You’ll be spending less time in front of a screen,  light tends to elevate mood & mood directly effects our immune system, concentration improves, & the body’s natural healing abilities increase.

3. Thieves. Did you read the fine print in the graphic? Do it. And besides that, thieves smells like Christmas & angels and heaven.  Even to a pregnant mama.

4. ACV, Honey & EmergenC bomb. Apple Cider vinegar- Bragg’s is my favorite–because it contains “the mother” or raw enzymes & gut friendly bacteria that promote healing. It also has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Local raw (or unpasteurized) honey can help fight allergies & is chalk full of minerals, enzymes, antioxidants & has anti-viral & anti-fungal properties. In Ayurveda, honey is recognized as a powerful medicine to treat kapha imbalances (among other things, kapha imbalance=phlegm). Don’t heat the honey or it can create ama or toxins in your system. And can we get a big grin for  vitamin C, because we all know it’s been recommended for ages to help in tissue repair and flu-fighting. You could probably also use OJ or lemon juice, but I think EmergenC is slightly more palatable.

5. Fruits & veggies. In addition to being loaded with nutrients and anti-oxidants, fruits and veggies are loaded with another magic ingredient: Fiber. If you are backed up (yes, constipated), your body is holding on to nasty stuff. You should be going twice a day. Veggies a vital for optimal elimination & highly effective (ask a vegan). Also note that the cellulose in veggies will attach to toxins and remove them from your body with the poo.

6. Sleep. We all know this. I’ll post later how to get more when it alludes you. Unless you too are 8 months pregnant. Then, well, good luck 🙂

7. Water. Again, obvious. But drink half your weight in ounces a day.

8. Neti. Clears sinuses more thoroughly than a saline rinse. Again, don’t use tap water, and don’t do it without:

9. Nasya. Neti, and any saline rinse is drying & consistent use may increase sinusitis. That’s why you moisturize.

10. Vitamin D. Again, widely accepted immune booster.

  1. Our family never gets the common flu (we did get the stomach flu earlier this year…not pretty). We use Emergen-C, Cold-eeze lozenges, lemon & honey with green tea (or just honey), Emergen-C, and Oscillococcinum (Ocillo for short). I’ve used the Neti pot with distilled water, but really don’t like using it on myself and try to keep to saline spray.
    We’re a bit more mainstream. I use Vicks on feet with double socks for coughs, and baby vicks or eucalyptus oil for congestion to help sleep at night.

    Question I have, how do you know if the supplement you’re taking is a whole food one or synthetic? Since labels like “all natural” can be so misleading, and I don’t live close to a natural food store.

    1. I forgot about Oscillo! I have taken it before, and found it to be fairly effective in warding off some of the really nasty flu symptoms–even though homeopathic medicines haven’t always worked for me.

      You can tell if the supplement you are taking is whole food based by a few details. Look to see if the label says 100% Natural instead of All natural ingredients; look at the ingredient list–you should recognize the foods (Organic beet juice, rather than Iron, etc.); look for too many words ending in “ide” or “ate”. Over the counter brands that I trust are Megafoods, Garden of Life’s RAW Vitamin Code, and New Chapter–though they are debatable because they were recently bought out by Proctor & Gamble. You can order all of them at a lower cost from vitacost.com–an easy way to get them if you don’t live near a health food store; I’m unaware of any major grocery chains that carry those brands.
