I don’t expect it to get much warmer than this today. It’s already 1:00. The chill in the air poses a bit of a problem for this pregnant mom. You see, I loathe the gym. I love working out, but not in a gym.
Before getting pregnant, this temperature wouldn’t have stopped me from running. I would have bundled up (it’s easier when all of your jackets zip over your belly), strapped on my yaktrax, and headed out the door. I might also have been teaching one of the 3-5 yoga classes I was teaching (and yes, some of them were in a gym). I might have stayed for a cardio or powerflex class after yoga. I definitely wouldn’t have subjected myself to running on a dreadmill or doing the stairmaster or weights. Before getting pregnant, I might also have done a workout at home. My favorite butt kicking home workouts include:
*Any of HER free on-line workouts. Seriously, try them. I don’t care what her history is, the workouts work.
*Jillian Michaels DVDs. 30 Day Shred, Ripped in 30, doesn’t matter. I like her.
*I have a ton of Yoga DVDs from when I taught at the high school. I’ll do a post on favorites sometime.
* Yoga Glo!
*My own made up yoga practice.
* My own made up circuit training.
While I stuck with some of these indoor options in the first trimester, by the second trimester, I wanted to make sure that what I was doing was safe for baby. Running, as I’ve written before, wasn’t an option for me. I envy all mamas who are running for two. Maybe next time around. Anyway, my options today consisted of these tried and true options:
* Yoga Glo! If you aren’t familiar with Yoga Glo, it’s a great way to have a home practice–whether you are a Registered Yoga Teacher or not. They have a ton of class options, and if you are pregnant, you can choose from many pre/post natal practices that range from 20 min-90 min. If you’re new to the site, you get a free 15 day trial. If not, the cost is minimal.
As advertised, it’s a 9 disc set. A disc for each month of pregnancy. Each one literally is a pain in the ass. She mainly focuses on arms and butt using dance-inspired moves. I usually do this 1-2 times a week (in addition to walking/hiking). Initially, the movements were annoying and jerky to me, especially the stretching and arms portion of the workout. After a while, I got used to the quick motions, and when it is too much, I stick to a static stretch while she jerks around. Has anyone else noticed this?
If you haven’t tried these, I do recommend them. They were worth the money I spent to buy them.
I like the second trimester DVD, but not the third one because I find the cardio movements (that she tries to tone down) awkward. On days when I feel less energetic though, I still do the third trimester DVD and modify it how I see fit. Like with Tracy Anderson, I’m not a fan of a lot of up and down annoying movements. Especially during stretching or strength training. So any time she bobs up and out of squats, I hold them. It also makes the workout a little more challenging. None of these are particularly difficult, but I’m not trying to be a supermom. I just want to maintain some level of fitness so my body stays healthy while growing this baby.
Oh, she also calls the butt “bun-cakes.”
I hated this in the second trimester. But lately, I’ve been liking it more than Lindsay Brin’s. It’s nice because you can pick and choose to make your own workout from strength, cardio and stretching. All the options are 10 minutes long, so if you only have 10 minutes to fit some exercise in, this is great.
The only thing I really don’t like is the lady who introduces each workout. I feel like she’s missing a martini and a cigarette…something about her slurry “Hey mama, got baby on the brain and your booty on the line….”
Even though none of these is perfect, and none really compares to pre-pregnancy indoor workouts, they are better than doing nothing. They are also better than risking a fall on all the ice outside when I’m a little clumsier than normal. Plus, I’m 35 weeks today, so I know I don’t have too many more of these days where I’m stuck inside for my workouts. This time now, along with the time it takes me to recover from labor, are such a small price to pay for the blessing of a baby.
Still, I can’t wait to lace up my running shoes, regardless of the weather, leave this little boy with dad for half and hour and run again. Not long now.
